Annealing is a treatment method for alloys aimed to improve the material mechanical properties due to changes of its microstructure at high temperatures. Usually, the annealing consists of three steps:
- Step 1: A piece to be annealed is heated by a source based on electrical resistance and ceramics up to the defined temperature in a manner reaching its uniform heating throughout its entire volume.
- Step 2: The achieved temperature (annealing temperature) is held during defined period.
- Step 3: After the annealing period under the previous step is elapsed, the heat-treated part shall be cooled gradually, at a precisely defined cooling rate (in °C per hour).
Sometimes, the annealing consists of more than three steps. Such procedure is called annealing schedule. The annealing temperature is often very close to the temperature of the material melting start, however, the former shall never be higher than the latter. Most frequently, the purpose of annealing is in the increase of toughness, ductility and breaking strength.
